WE'LL MEET AGAIN NEXT SUMMER
Now this is very old fashioned, but because it's about a romance between two elderly people, it's what it needs. I have the tune in my head but haven't got round to writing it out. Yo could say it's very Rodgers and Hart, with Rodgers' composing with his Hart hat on.
I was a banker in the city
I gave to them far more than they deserved
They sent me off with what they called a handshake
It wasn't worth the many years I'd served
I used it all to sail around the globe
My final port of call was Honolulu
And there amongst the music and the strobe
Those eyes that stayed my heart had strayed in you too
It chanced that we both lived along the same street
And neither of us claimed to live alone
We promised we would never meet on Main Street
And never get in touch or try to phone
To meet again had never been in question
We set aside a time to meet next year
The very same hotel in Honolulu
A time and place that we held very dear
We'll meet again next summer
With Autumn not so very far
The moonlight and distant drummer
And soft Hawaiian guitar
We'll meet again next summer
And leave winter and spring far behind
We'll pay the wayside strummer
Because next summer is to love assigned
